Hamburgers have lovely thick fresh bread rolls encasing a big, fat, tasty meat patty (not a processed Maccas version, I’m talking homemade, fresh off the BBQ style), then layers of fresh crispy lettuce, a slice or two of tomato, maybe some mayonnaise, or some special sauce your mum mixed up and if you really want to get creative you might throw on a slice of cheese. That’s a hamburger right?
So I thought. Here a hamburger is a much more disappointing affair. It involves the meat patty. That’s it, just the meat patty. I knew this because occasionally I make ‘hamburgers’ for the kids I look after. But one day I was craving a good old style pub hamburger, you know, the ones so big you sit there wondering how you will fit the entire thing in your mouth. They never fit, but that’s the beauty of it right? So I forgot that that I was in Italy, land of pasta and pizza, saw on the menu board, hamburger with side of salad and my mind was made up. I was excited (and hungry)! Out comes a plate of two meat patties (which turned out to be vegetarian), and a large sprinkling of salad on the side. My friend ordered pasta. I should have known better.
